Abstract

A comparative study of oxidation of Mandelic acid by different Cr (VI) oxidants [PCC, PDC,] has been studied in DMSO medium in the presence of PTSA by spectrophotometrically (λ = 460nm) at 303K. The reaction is first order with respect to PCC, PDC, [H+] and substrate. Michaelis-Menten type kinetics was observed. The reaction rate increases with increasing volume percentage of DMSO in reaction mixture, suggesting the involvement of an ion in the rate determining step. The reaction rates were studied at different temperature and the activation parameters has been computed. The reaction proceeds through formation of cyclic chromateester between protonated Oxidants and α-hydroxy acid.
